On Sunday, September 11th, the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds Volleyball team wrapped up the “Dazzler Blackbird Invitational” with a split with a victory over the New Jersey Institute of Technology and a loss to number seven ranked Florida Gators.
The Blackbirds would sweep NJIT (25-13; 25-18; 25-20).
Junior Outside hitter Alexandria Lilliquist led the Blackbirds with ten kills, five aces, and nine digs.
Senior opposite hitter Alex Larsen would finish the game with 12 kills, three aces, seven digs, and an assist.
Second year Head Coach Ken Ko said, “I think we’re the best 2-8 team in the country. We have the top experience playing against some top opponents, you look at the record; this team is very good in solving problems and the chemistry is there and our ability is just going to keep getting better. The record hasn’t discouraged us because we’re learning, and focusing on getting better.”
The Blackbirds would also play the Florida Gators to wrap up the Invitational but would fall short, as they would loose three sets to zero. (25-14; 25-14; 25-18).
Ko said, “We were competitive. We still get stuck, especially in the third set; we were right with them and we gave up a nine point run which turned out to be the difference of the game.”
“We’re doing a lot of great things out there, we have the capability. The wood is a little big wet; we just have to get a little more seasoned. We’re learning a lot about ourselves and how to compete.”
The Blackbirds now fall to 2-8 on the season.
They will now head to Tampa, Florida and compete in the “USF Invitational.”
The Blackbirds will be playing Wright State University, Stetson University; and The University of South Florida.
They will return back home on Saturday, September 24th, as they will play their first conference game against Fairleigh Dickinson.
